Acne Q & A

What causes acne?

Acne occurs when there’s an increase in your skin’s production of sebum, the natural oily substance your hair follicles create to keep skin and hair moisturized.

Usually, the sebum moves from the bottom of the follicle toward the surface of the skin. As it moves, it gathers dead skin cells and removes them from the hair follicle.

When you have acne, the flow of sebum increases, plugging your hair follicles and blocking the oil and dead skin cells inside the follicle. This increase in sebum is often related to hormonal influences, as is the case in puberty and during pregnancy.

A blackhead forms if the pore is open, and a whitehead forms if the pore is closed. In many cases of acne, the skin becomes inflamed, creating redness, swelling, and pustules to form.

How can you reduce acne at home?

In mild cases of acne, certain habits may reduce the severity of acne and the frequency of breakouts.

To start your skin care routine, wash your face with a gentle cleanser twice a day. Don’t use rough washcloths or loofahs. Rinse well and pat dry with a towel. Also look for an over-the-counter acne product that contains:

  • Benzoyl peroxide
  • Salicylic acid
  • Glycolic acid
  • Lactic acid

Because these products often have a drying effect, moisturize your skin with a product that says it’s noncomedogenic (which means it won’t inflame your skin or worsen your acne).

Exercising regularly and engaging in stress-reducing activities may also improve your skin.
