IPL Q & A

Integrative Laser Center of Washington

What does IPL work?

Intense pulsed light (IPL) uses high-intensity light to create energy that it sends deep into your skin, where pigmented cells -- those that cause discoloration and dark spots -- absorb it. Because the device creates specific wavelengths of energy, IPL only impacts pigmented cells, leaving the rest of your skin safe.

At Integrative Laser Center of Washington, your licensed aesthetician uses the CUTERA® LimeLight to treat pigmentation issues on your face, arms, and decolletage, including:

  • Sunspots
  • Age spots
  • Sun damage
  • Red spots
  • Port wine stains

What happens during an IPL treatment?

When you visit Integrative Laser Center of Washington for IPL treatment, a team member shows you to a private room. If you’re wearing makeup, the aesthetician removes it and cleans your treatment area. If necessary, they shave the area. In some cases, they may apply a topical anesthetic to minimize any discomfort.

Both you and your aesthetician must wear protective eyewear before they turn on the LimeLight equipment. They may sample the laser on your skin, preparing you for the treatment procedure. Your IPL specialist then moves the handheld device over the treatment area, administering the light energy.

Depending on its size and darkness, the total treatment time ranges between 10-60 minutes. In many cases, the team at Integrative Laser Center of Washington recommend multiple treatment sessions to bring you optimal results.

What to expect after an IPL treatment?

Because IPL is a noninvasive treatment, it requires no downtime and has few restrictions.

Within 24-72 hours post-treatment, you may notice that your pigmented area begins to darken, eventually forming a crust that falls off in one to three weeks, leaving lighter skin beneath. For best results, don’t pick at this crust, but let it naturally form and fall off.

If you experience any discomfort after your IPL treatment, apply a cold compress to the area.

Schedule treatments four weeks or more apart and avoid sun exposure and tanning beds during the entire treatment regimen. When outside, protect the treatment area with sunscreen, reapplying regularly.

When brown spots and sun damage have you covering up your skin, it’s time to find a solution. Contact Integrative Laser Center of Washington today to see if IPL can help you reach your anti-aging goals. Call the office today to schedule your initial consultation or book it easily online.
